What is Hempcrete?

Simply put, Hempcrete is made up of hemp stalk (AKA hemp hurd), lime, and water.  Hempcrete is mixed and cast around a structural frame. Hempcrete is a monolithic wall system that is used in place of drywall, insulation, and siding, or a thermal envelope for energy efficient building projects.

Hempcrete is:

  • A Plant-Based Resource.  Industrial hemp is a rapidly renewable, plant based material. The inner core, referred to as the “Hurd,” is considered a waste product of the hemp industry and is well suited for use as a filler in insulating biocomposites. Industrial hemp isn’t energy intensive to grow and contributes to soil biodiversity during growth.
  • Carbon Sequestering.   Industrial Hemp absorbs CO2 from the air during its growth. After mixing the hurd with the binder, CO2  is absorbed during the solidification process, ultimately offsetting the building material’s carbon footprint. There is a net 50 KG of atmospheric CO2 sequestered in every square meter of hemp wall.

Benefits of Hempcrete

  • Dynamic Thermal Performance.  Hempcrete allows for temperature control in low and high temperatures.  It stores heat in the thermal mass of its wall which is then released slowly as the building cools down.
  • Fire Proof.  On a scale of 0-450, with 350 being extremely flammable, Hempcrete scores a 0 for flame spread and smoke developed.
  • Mold & Rot Proof. Hempcrete passively regulates humidity in a building.  One square meter of hemp wall can absorb up to 14 liters of water which can be released into the ground or recycled.  It is also breathable!
  • Pest proof.  Insect and rat resistant.
  • Durable.  Earthquake resistant.
  • Beautiful.  Aesthetically pleasing with other materials (stone, wood, tile).
  • Noise-Insulating. Exceptionally quiet from exterior and interior noise.
  • Healthy. Absolutely no off-gassing!
